Where It All Began — Dr. Jenny Bennett

Her Compassion Some people are just born for their calling. Jenny Bennett was one of them. She grew up splashing in creeks, playing with frogs, and petting every dog she could find. By the time she was working as a veterinary assistant and volunteering at a cat-only animal shelter during her college years, it was clear to everyone around her that animals weren't just something she loved — they were her purpose.
It took one good friend finally saying it out loud: "You know, you should be a veterinarian." And just like that, everything clicked.
She threw herself into that path completely, earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in California in 2008, and bringing it — and all of herself — back home to Durham, North Carolina.
Her Dream | Urban Tails Dr. Bennett didn't just want to practice veterinary medicine. She wanted to reimagine it. She believed deeply in the bond between humans and animals, and she believed just as deeply that a visit to the vet didn't have to be a source of stress or fear for anyone involved. She spent years working across the Triangle, refining her vision, until in 2020 she opened Urban Tails Veterinary Hospital and brought that vision to life.
She earned certifications in Fear Free Practice and the Human-Animal Bond, and she built every corner of Urban Tails around those principles. She cultivated partnerships with animal rescues, advocacy groups, local artists, and neighboring businesses because she wanted Urban Tails to be part of the community, not just a clinic in it. Clients traveled from all parts of the Triangle to be cared for by the veterinarian they called "Dr. B." Her usual response? "It's just Jenny."
That was her. No pretense. Just genuine, wholehearted care for every pet and every person who walked through the door.
Her Love If you knew Jenny outside of the clinic, you knew a woman who filled every room she entered with laughter, warmth, and more than a little wit. She was an avid reader, a music lover, a runner, a crocheter, and a dedicated ukulele player. More than anything, she loved bringing people together — her home was always full of the people she cared about, and that circle was wide.
She was also pretty easy to spot in the clinic. Just look for the colorful shoes.
At the heart of it all was her family: her husband, her children, her granddaughter, her five dogs, and her six cats. She lived with the same joy and warmth at home that she brought to Urban Tails every single day.
Her Legacy Dr. Bennett changed what veterinary care looks like in this community. Her legacy lives in every patient who walked through our doors a little less afraid, every family who felt truly heard during a difficult moment, and every team member who learned firsthand that medicine and compassion are not separate things — they are the same thing.
Her loss is immeasurable to all of us; to her team, to the thousands of families and pets she cared for, and to the veterinary community that is better for having had her in it. Through Urban Tails and her tireless work with animal rescues, her impact continues in every life she touched.
Her story doesn't end here. It lives on in every patient we care for, every family we support, and every life we touch in the community she loved so deeply. We carry her vision forward with the same heart she poured into it from the very beginning.
We will miss you more than words can say, Just Jenny.
